Red Light Therapy: What a 2023 Clinical Study Showed

A 2023 clinical study evaluated whether red light therapy can reverse visible signs of skin ageing.

In this study, 20 adults used an at-home red LED mask emitting light at 630 ± 10 nm for 12 minutes per session, twice weekly, over a period of 3 months.

Researchers assessed multiple objective markers of skin ageing, including:

• Crow’s feet wrinkle depth

• Facial sagging

• Skin firmness and elasticity

• Dermal density measured via ultrasound imaging

• Skin roughness

• Pore size

• Sebum levels

• Complexion uniformity

• Overall participant satisfaction

Results After 12 Weeks

Results showed progressive improvements throughout the treatment period.

After 12 weeks:

• Crow’s feet wrinkle depth was reduced by up to approximately 38%

• Skin firmness and elasticity significantly increased

• Dermal density improved

• Participants demonstrated smoother texture

• Skin roughness reduced

• Pores appeared smaller

• Sebum production decreased

• Complexion became more even

Importantly, benefits persisted for at least one month after discontinuing treatment, suggesting structural changes rather than purely temporary cosmetic effects. (PMID: 37522497)

How Red Light Therapy Works

Red light at approximately 630 nm penetrates the skin and stimulates mitochondrial activity within cells.

This increases ATP production, which supports:

• Cellular repair

• Collagen synthesis

• Improved tissue recovery

• Reduced inflammatory response

Unlike blue light therapy, which is primarily used for acne and bacterial control, red light therapy is focused on regeneration and collagen support.

At Rosem Health, red light therapy is available as an add-on at the end of all treatments.

It is commonly used following:

• RF microneedling

• HIFU

• Microneedling

• Chemical peels

• Skin booster treatments

After these procedures, the skin enters a repair phase. Red light therapy is used to help support the repair process by encouraging cellular activity and collagen stimulation.

It is also a relaxing way to conclude a session, with no downtime or surface irritation.

The cost is £25 as an add-on.
